Do You Need a Separate Email Verifier If Your Sequencer Already Verifies?

··3 min read

Not always. If you send from one tool, its check keeps risky leads out, and you don't re-check often, your sequencer's built-in verification can be enough. A separate verifier earns its place when the same leads go to several tools, when you re-check large lists every month, or when you want catch-all addresses held back by default. Smartlead's own help page, for example, says it sends to valid and catch-all leads after verification.

What each tool says about its own check

Tool How it verifies Cost (as published) Catch-all / risky by default Source, read
Instantly Tick verify on upload, or run it on leads later 0.25 credits per lead; credit plans from $9 a month for 150 credits "Invalid and Risky leads will not be contacted by default"; risky can be enabled How to verify leads, 3 Nov 2026; credit plans, 30 Oct 2026
Smartlead Add-on run from a new campaign before launch "Starting from 6000 credits for $15 USD" After verification it "will send emails only to valid and catch all leads" Verify your lead list, 3 Nov 2026
lemlist Verifies during enrichment; also a Bouncer integration Uses lemlist or Bouncer credits Statuses Deliverable, Risky, Undeliverable lemlist statuses, October 2026
Apollo Its own multi-step process, including network data Included in Apollo plans Status is Apollo's last recorded check, with a date column Export contacts, read 23 Oct 2026

Two details from those pages matter more than price:

  • Smartlead: "You cannot verify leads once a campaign is live." Leads added later go out unchecked unless you verify them before they join.
  • Apollo: exporting existing records doesn't re-enrich them. A file exported today can carry statuses from months ago. See should you re-verify an Apollo export.

When the built-in check is enough

  • One sequencer, one campaign at a time, leads imported straight from a source you trust.
  • The tool keeps risky and catch-all leads out by default, or you've set it to.
  • You rarely re-check the same leads.

When a separate verifier pays for itself

  1. The same leads go to several tools. Verifying once before import is cheaper than paying each tool's credits, and every tool gets the same clean file.
  2. You re-check big lists often. Per-lead credits scale with every pass. A flat plan doesn't: Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off.
  3. You want catch-alls held back. SimpleVerifier keeps catch-all addresses in risky and grades each one, so you can send to the safer ones in a small separate campaign. See catch-all leads in sequences.
  4. You pay per contact or per lead elsewhere. Dropping dead rows before import keeps them off your bill.

Run your own numbers

The Instantly verification cost calculator and Smartlead verification cost calculator price your monthly lead count in each tool's credits next to our plans. If you already use Instantly, you can verify Instantly leads without exporting. Results go back as a tag on each lead, and nothing is deleted unless you tick it.

Either way, watch the bounce line

Whichever check you use, keep an eye on the tool's auto-pause. Instantly pauses at 5% by default, and lemlist alerts at 10%; the full list is in bounce rate limits by platform. Try a sample on /verify first: the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. See pricing for plans.

Common questions

Do I need to verify emails if Instantly already verifies them?

Not necessarily. Instantly's help page says verification costs 0.25 credits per lead and that invalid and risky leads are not contacted by default. A separate verifier makes sense if you also send the same leads from another tool, re-check large lists often, or want to clean the file before paying to import it.

Does Smartlead send to catch-all emails after verification?

Its help page says that if you launch the campaign after verification, Smartlead will send only to valid and catch-all leads. If you want catch-alls in a separate, smaller campaign, split them out yourself before launch.

Is Apollo's Verified status enough?

It is Apollo's last recorded result, with a date. Apollo's export guide says exporting existing records does not re-enrich them. For an old export, a fresh check right before sending is the safer move.

Is it cheaper to verify inside my sequencer?

It depends on your plan and volume. Put your monthly lead count into the Instantly or Smartlead verification cost calculator and compare it with a flat plan.
