Remove Blank Rows From a CSV Before an Import (Including the Ones You Can't See)
Remove three kinds of row: empty lines, lines of only commas, and lines of only spaces. Then decide separately whether rows with no email should go too. The remove blank rows from CSV tool does both in your browser, keeps the delimiter and row order, and downloads what it removed so you can check it. Avoid the delete-in-Excel-and-save route on a contact file; it can change values in the rows you keep.
Source: RFC 4180, the CSV format, read 3 November 2026. It treats each line as a record, which is why an importer sees a comma-only line as a contact with empty fields.
Where invisible blank rows come from
- Cleared, not deleted. Someone selected rows and pressed Delete. The values are gone but the rows stay in the sheet's used range, and they export as
,,,,,. - A stray space. A cell with one space, a non-breaking space pasted from a web page or a zero-width character looks empty and exports as a row that isn't blank to a computer.
- Gaps from the export itself. Some systems put an empty line between records or at the end of the file.
- Placeholders.
N/A,nullor a lone dash. Whether these mean blank depends on the column, so the tool only treats them as blank if you tick the option.
Steps
- Paste or upload the CSV (up to 25 MB). The header row is kept.
- Choose the options: count N/A, null and dash as blank; trim spaces at the start and end of cells; drop columns that are empty in every row.
- For an email import, pick Also rows where any chosen column is blank and tick the email column. To keep a row if it has either an email or a phone, pick All chosen columns blank and tick both.
- Download the cleaned CSV and the removed rows, which carry their line numbers.
Why not just do it in Excel?
| Browser tool | Excel (Go To Special, Blanks) | |
|---|---|---|
| Fully empty lines | Removed | Removed if you select whole rows |
| Lines of only commas | Removed | Removed with the rest |
| Rows of only spaces | Removed | Missed |
| Rows blank in one column | Removed when ticked | Filter (Blanks), delete visible rows |
| Other values in the file | Unchanged | Re-saved; leading zeros can be lost |
The last row is the one that bites. Re-saving a CSV from Excel writes Excel's version of every value, so zip codes and long IDs can change; open a CSV in Excel without losing leading zeros explains why.
What to check next
Blank rows are the obvious problem; half-filled rows are the quiet one. Run the CSV fill rate checker to see how many rows have a first name or company before you write a merge field around them; mail merge blank fields covers what to do with the gaps. Then remove repeats with remove duplicate emails, which this tool doesn't do.
Limits
The tool doesn't judge content: a row with only a name is kept unless you tick a column that must be filled. Rows with more cells than the header are kept as they are. A file without a header loses nothing, but its first line is treated as the header. And a row with an email isn't a row with a working email.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Upload the cleaned file at /verify: every address gets a live mailbox check, and valid, risky and invalid download as separate files with your other columns kept. Remove invalid emails from a CSV covers the next step. The first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
How do I remove blank rows from a CSV file?
Remove empty lines, delimiter-only lines and whitespace-only lines while keeping the header and the order of everything else. A browser tool such as SimpleVerifier's remove blank rows from CSV does it without re-saving through Excel, and downloads the removed rows separately.
Why does my CSV have empty rows at the bottom?
Usually because rows in the spreadsheet were cleared rather than deleted. The cells are empty, but Excel still exports them as lines of commas, and importers read each one as a contact with no data.
How do I delete rows where the email column is empty?
In Excel, filter the email column for (Blanks), select the visible rows, delete them and clear the filter. In the browser tool, choose rows where any chosen column is blank and tick email.
Do blank rows cause import errors?
Often. Some importers reject the file, some skip the rows with a warning, and some create empty records you then have to delete. Which one depends on the tool.
