Turned Off Track Clicks in HighLevel but Links Are Still Rewritten? Check the Domain Setting

··3 min read

In HighLevel, open and click tracking for LC Email are set on each dedicated sending domain, not only on the email or workflow. The switches are under Settings, Email Services, Dedicated Domain and IP, then Domain Settings on the domain card. While that Click Tracking toggle is on, links are wrapped through a tracking redirect. If you've turned tracking off somewhere else and links are still rewritten, check the domain toggle, then confirm in a delivered email.

Sources, read 2 November 2026: HighLevel's email tracking for LC Email (modified 30 June 2026), its older click tracking in email campaigns guide (modified 10 October 2024), and an r/GoHighLevel post from late October 2026, paraphrased below.

Where HighLevel's tracking settings are

  • Per sending domain (LC Email): Settings, Email Services, LC Email selected, Dedicated Domain and IP, three-dot menu on the domain card, Domain Settings. Toggle Click Tracking and Open Tracking. HighLevel says changes apply to emails sent through that domain and each domain can be set independently.
  • Per campaign or email: HighLevel's older click tracking guide describes enabling click tracking per campaign when sending or scheduling, says it's off by default there, and says it isn't supported for workflows. That article predates the domain toggle, so the two don't fully agree; the newer domain setting is the one to check first.

HighLevel also says tracking is only available on LC Email, not with Mailgun or when Google is your SMTP provider, and that tracking requires a dedicated sending domain.

What one user ran into

A HighLevel user posted that they'd switched off Track Clicks on a workflow email, expecting clicks not to be tracked, and then found the links in a delivered copy rewritten through HighLevel's tracking domain. Click Tracking and Open Tracking were both still on in the domain settings. Once they turned those off and sent another test, the links pointed straight to their own pages. Their advice: check both places and inspect a real email rather than trusting a switch.

We haven't reproduced this ourselves, and HighLevel's menus change, but the check takes two minutes.

How to check yours

  1. Open the domain settings as above and note whether Click Tracking and Open Tracking are on for each sending domain.
  2. Send a test from the workflow or campaign you care about to an inbox you can read.
  3. Look at the links. View the original or source, or copy a link address. If it starts with your own site, it isn't wrapped. If it starts with a tracking domain, click tracking is on somewhere.
  4. Paste the email's HTML into the email link checker to list every link with its text and target, and flag links whose text shows one domain while the link goes to another.
  5. Look for a pixel. Open tracking usually adds a tiny image near the end of the HTML.

Should you turn tracking off?

Trade-offs, not a rule:

  • Off suits one-to-one sales email and privacy-conscious senders. Plain links to your own domain avoid sharing a tracking domain's reputation. See open tracking and cold email deliverability and custom tracking domains.
  • On gives you HighLevel's engagement reporting. HighLevel says turning tracking off removes visibility into opens, clicks, bounces and more, and recommends keeping it on.

If you turn it off, keep watching bounces and complaints another way: Google Postmaster Tools for Gmail, and checking lists before import. HighLevel emails going to spam covers the wider sending setup.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

With bounce data harder to see, checking addresses before they enter HighLevel matters more. Export contacts with the HighLevel contacts tool and upload the file on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.

Common questions

How do I turn off click tracking in HighLevel?

For LC Email, go to Settings, Email Services, make sure LC Email is selected, click Dedicated Domain and IP, open the three-dot menu on your sending domain, choose Domain Settings, and switch off Click Tracking (and Open Tracking if you want). Each domain is set separately.

Why are my HighLevel links still tracked after I turned off Track Clicks?

HighLevel has more than one tracking control. One user reported that turning off Track Clicks in a workflow email didn't stop link rewriting until the domain-level Click Tracking toggle under Email Services was also off. Check both, then confirm in a delivered email.

Does click tracking hurt deliverability?

It can, mainly when links are rewritten to a shared tracking domain whose reputation you don't control, or when the visible link text shows one domain and the link goes to another. Using a tracking domain on your own domain, or no click tracking for one-to-one emails, reduces that.

What do I lose if I turn off tracking in HighLevel?

HighLevel's article says you'll no longer see engagement data such as opens, clicks, bounces and more, and it recommends keeping tracking on. If you turn it off, watch bounces another way, for example Google Postmaster Tools for Gmail.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
