Junk Leads From Facebook Lead Ads: How to Clean Them Before Follow-Up

··4 min read

Clean Facebook and Instagram lead ad leads by verifying every email, formatting and checking phone numbers, and removing duplicates before the leads reach your CRM or nurture sequence. Instant Forms prefill details from the person's account, so emails are often old personal addresses, and some entries are typos, fakes or accidental submissions.

Why lead ad data is messy

Problem Why it happens
Old personal email Prefilled from an account created years ago
Fake or edited email Person changes the field to avoid follow-up
Typos Edited addresses like gmial.com
Accidental submissions Prefill makes submitting very quick
Phone in mixed formats Local formats, missing country codes
Duplicates Same person submits more than once or on several ads

Prefill is what makes lead ads cheap per lead, and it is also why quality varies.

Step 1: Get the leads out

  • Leads Center or CSV download from your Meta business tools for batches.
  • CRM integration if your CRM syncs leads directly.
  • Automation through Zapier, Make or a webhook for real-time handling.

Use whichever you already have; the cleaning steps are the same.

Step 2: Verify emails

Upload the email column to a verifier and sort:

Status Follow-up
Valid Into the nurture sequence and CRM
Invalid Do not email; try the phone number if you have consent
Disposable Low intent; deprioritise
Catch-all or unknown Email, but watch bounces

Fix obvious typos first with the email typo corrector; "john@gmial.com" is often a real lead with a fixable address.

Step 3: Clean the phone numbers

  1. Format to E.164 with the phone number formatter, adding the country code where it is missing.
  2. Check validity and line type with the bulk phone number validator.
  3. Dedupe after formatting with the duplicate phone number remover.

Before texting, check you have consent for texts; a lead form submission may not cover it. Validation cannot confirm a number is in service or able to receive texts. See validating phone numbers before an SMS campaign.

Step 4: Automate it

If leads arrive daily, add verification between the form and your CRM so sales only sees checked leads:

  1. Trigger on a new lead from your lead ads integration.
  2. Call a verification API with the email.
  3. Write the result to a CRM field such as "Email status".
  4. Route valid leads to the sequence, and send invalid ones to a phone-first or discard queue.

Automatically verify new leads with Zapier, Make or a webhook and the HighLevel workflow guide show the setup.

Step 5: Improve quality at the form

You cannot add custom validation inside an Instant Form, but you can make low-quality leads less likely:

Change Effect
Use the higher intent form type Adds a review step before submitting
Add a qualifying question Filters out people with no real interest
Ask for a work email (B2B) Moves away from prefilled personal addresses, at the cost of fewer leads
Set clear expectations in the form intro Fewer people surprised by follow-up

Measure cost per verified lead, not cost per lead. The cost per lead calculator helps compare ad sets once you know how many leads were real.

Step 6: Follow up quickly

Lead ad leads go cold fast because the submission took seconds and the person may not remember it. Verify in real time, then follow up within minutes where possible, reminding them which ad and offer they responded to.

Feed results back to your ads

Track verified-lead rate by campaign, ad set and form. If one audience produces mostly invalid emails, cut it even if its cost per lead looks good. Lead quality data is one of the most useful signals for ad optimisation.

What to tell your sales team

Sales teams often blame lead ads for bad leads, and sometimes they are right. Give them a clear process:

  • Only verified leads are assigned for email follow-up.
  • Leads with an invalid email but a valid phone go to a call-first queue, where consent rules allow.
  • Leads with neither go back to marketing as data, not as work.
  • Feedback on lead quality is recorded in the CRM, not in chat.

That turns arguments about lead quality into numbers marketing can act on.

Clean your lead export

Download your lead ads export and upload it on the verify page. You get 100 free email checks when you sign in with Google, no card, which is enough to see how many of last week's leads were real.

Common questions

Why are my Facebook lead ad emails fake or bouncing?

Instant Forms prefill from the person's Facebook or Instagram account, which may hold an old address they no longer use. Some people also edit the field with a fake address, and some submissions are accidental.

How do I verify Facebook lead ad emails?

Download leads as CSV from Meta's Leads Center or your connected CRM and upload them to a verifier, or add a verification step in an automation (such as Zapier or Make) between the form and your CRM.

Can I stop fake leads on Facebook lead forms?

You cannot add your own validation inside an Instant Form, but you can use Meta's higher intent form type, add a qualifying question, and verify contact details after submission before follow-up.

Can I text phone numbers from lead ads?

Only if you have consent for texts, which a lead form alone may not provide. Format the numbers and check line type first. Validation cannot confirm a number is in service or can receive texts.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
