Can You Use Zoho Mail for Cold Email? What Zoho's Own Policy Says

··3 min read

Zoho Mail isn't built for automated cold email, and its own usage policy says so. The policy says Zoho Mail can't be used for bulk or mass, marketing or automated email, external sending limits rise and fall with your reputation, and a burst of bounces is a named trigger for blocking outgoing mail. A founder sending a few personal emails a day from Zoho is fine. A sequencer pushing campaigns through a fleet of Zoho inboxes is outside what Zoho allows.

Zoho comes up constantly in cold email forums because it's cheap. The threads follow a pattern: someone starts on Zoho, hits a block or an organization-level ban, moves to Google Workspace, and is surprised by what they find there.

What Zoho's policy and limits say

Zoho's usage policy (last updated 13 October 2026) says Zoho Mail "cannot be used for sending out emails" in these categories: promotional, bulk or mass, marketing, newsletters, automated and transactional. It lists unusual activity that can restrict an account, including:

  • "Sending a large number of undeliverable emails (Bounce emails)"
  • "Sending a large number of emails within a short span of time"

When that happens, Zoho says "our system temporarily restricts email outgoing or email incoming", usually lifted "automatically within a few hours", with an UnblockMe page for users and an unblock option for admins. Blocks tied to suspicious or harmful activity go to Zoho support instead.

Zoho's rates and limits page adds the numbers:

Limit Zoho's figure
External sending 50-500 emails an hour, "reputation-based and adjust dynamically"
Window "Sending limits operate on a 1-hour rolling basis"
After the limit No new messages "for up to 1 hour"
External recipients per message 150 on paid accounts, 100 on free

What that means for cold outreach

  • Automated sequences are out of policy. A sequencer sending through Zoho inboxes is automated outreach by definition.
  • Bounces hit harder than volume. At 20 emails a day, a list with 10% bad addresses produces two bounces a day per inbox, every day. That's the pattern Zoho's policy names.
  • The ban can be organization-wide. One sender described an organization-level ban for cold volume that took every mailbox down at once.

If you're moving off Zoho

A sender who moved from Zoho to Google Workspace saw a 6-7% bounce rate on the first campaign, mostly policy rejections from enterprise gateways, and realized the old setup had been failing quietly rather than bouncing. Before you blame the new provider, compare like with like:

  1. Check authentication on the new domains with the bulk email authentication checker.
  2. Read the bounce codes. 5.1.1 means bad addresses. 5.7.x from Mimecast or Proofpoint means a gateway refused an unknown sender; see cold email to enterprise companies.
  3. Pick the new provider on its own limits. Our comparison of Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365 for cold email covers both providers' published limits.

If you stay on Zoho

Keep it to genuinely one-to-one email, low volume, and a clean list:

  1. Upload every list on the verify page before you write a single email. Valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
  2. Send only to the valid file.
  3. Stay far below the hourly limits and spread sends through the day.

If your prospects use Zoho as their mail provider, that's a different question: the Zoho email checker checks whether a Zoho-hosted address exists.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

The checkers above are free. For mailbox checks, the first 100 are free with a Google sign-in on the verify page. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks, and Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.

Common questions

Is Zoho Mail good for cold email?

For automated cold campaigns, no: Zoho's usage policy excludes bulk, mass, marketing and automated email. For a founder writing a few personal emails a day from a Zoho mailbox, it works, as long as the list is clean and volume stays low.

Why was my Zoho account blocked for sending?

Zoho restricts outgoing mail when it sees unusual activity. Its usage policy names a large number of bounces and a large number of emails in a short time as examples. The block usually lifts within a few hours, and Zoho offers an UnblockMe page.

What is Zoho Mail's sending limit?

Zoho's rates and limits page says external sending is reputation-based, from 50 to 500 emails an hour, measured on a rolling one-hour basis. Paid accounts can address 150 external recipients per message, free accounts 100.

Why didn't I see bounces on Zoho but I do on Google Workspace?

One sender who moved from Zoho to Google Workspace found bounces they had never seen before. Check whether messages from your old setup were actually being delivered and bounced back. Missing bounces don't mean there were no failures.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
