Verify a Google Sheet Without Downloading It: Paste the Link or Run It In the Sheet

··4 min read

To verify a Google Sheet without the download-and-upload loop, paste the sheet's link on the verify page. The tab is fetched as CSV and goes through the same steps as a dropped file. The only setup is sharing: the sheet has to be readable by anyone with the link while you import it. If the sheet is a live list that keeps growing, use the Apps Script menu in the sheet instead, which writes a status next to each address.

Sources, read 2 November 2026: Google's help pages on sharing files from Google Drive and ISEMAIL, and Google's Apps Script UrlFetchApp reference.

Why formulas aren't enough

ISEMAIL returns TRUE for anything shaped like an email address; Google's help page says it doesn't check that the address exists. A mailbox check needs the domain's MX record and an SMTP conversation with its mail server. Formulas have neither, and Apps Script can only make HTTP requests through UrlFetchApp, so any in-sheet verification calls an outside API. The formula-level cleanup (trim, lowercase, dedupe) is in verifying emails in Google Sheets with formulas; this post is the step after it.

Route 1: paste the link (one-off lists)

  1. Open the tab you want. The link carries the tab id after #gid=. A link without one imports the first tab.
  2. Share it for the import. Click Share, and under General access choose "Anyone with the link" with the Viewer role. Google's sharing help covers the setting.
  3. Copy the link from the address bar.
  4. Sign in on the verify page with Google, and under the upload box paste the link and press Import sheet.
  5. Check the column match. The email column is found by its contents; the preview shows the rows that will be checked.
  6. Run it. The first 100 checks are free.
  7. Set the sheet back to Restricted once the import has finished.

What the import refuses, and why:

Message What to do
Sheet isn't shared General access is still Restricted. Change it and try again.
Sheet not found The link is wrong or the tab was deleted.
Over 50 MB Split the tab into smaller ones.
Tab is empty The gid points at a blank tab. Open the right tab and copy the link again.

Only links on docs.google.com are accepted, and the import builds Google's own CSV export address from the sheet id and tab id rather than fetching whatever you paste.

Route 2: verify inside the sheet (lists you keep adding to)

For a sign-up sheet, a form-responses tab or a lead tracker that gets new rows every week, the Google Sheets integration is a script you paste once into Extensions > Apps Script:

  1. Paste the script into Code.gs, save, reload the sheet.
  2. Choose SimpleVerifier > Set API key and paste a key from your API keys page.
  3. Select the email column and choose Verify selected emails. Status and Reason fill the next two columns.

Rows that already have a result are skipped, so running it again only spends checks on new rows. There's also =SV_VERIFY(A2) for a single cell. The script calls the API, so it needs an active plan; the free checks don't apply to it.

Which route to pick

Paste the link Apps Script menu
Best for A list you'll verify once A sheet that keeps growing
Setup Share the sheet for a minute Paste a script once, add an API key
Results Downloaded from the results page Written into the sheet
Free checks First 100 apply Need a plan
Sheet sharing Anyone with the link, while importing Stays private

If the sheet holds anything you'd rather not share even briefly, use File > Download > CSV and drop the file instead, or use the Apps Script route.

What the results can and can't tell you

Valid and invalid are firm answers. Risky and unknown are not: catch-all domains accept every address, so a single mailbox can't be confirmed, and many Microsoft consumer mailboxes (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) don't give a reliable answer to a mailbox check. Read valid, risky, invalid and catch-all before you delete those rows; most are better sent to in a small batch than dropped.

Where SimpleVerifier fits

Paste a sheet link or drop a file on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off, and includes the API for the Apps Script route. See pricing.

Common questions

Can I verify emails in Google Sheets without downloading a CSV?

Yes. Either paste the sheet's link on the SimpleVerifier verify page, which imports the tab directly, or add the SimpleVerifier Apps Script to the sheet and verify a selected column from a menu. Both skip the download and upload step.

Why does the import say the sheet isn't shared?

The link import reads the sheet the way a logged-out visitor would, so a Restricted sheet returns Google's sign-in page instead of data. Set General access to 'Anyone with the link' with the Viewer role, import, then set it back to Restricted.

Which tab gets imported?

The tab in the link. Google adds #gid= and a number to the address when you open a tab; a link with no gid imports the first tab. Open the tab you want before copying the link.

Is there a size limit?

The import takes the same maximum as a dropped file, 50 MB of CSV. A larger sheet needs splitting into smaller tabs first.

Do the free checks work with the Apps Script menu?

No. The 100 free checks apply in the web app, including the link import. The Apps Script calls the API, which needs an active plan and an API key.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
