Smartlead Campaign Paused and Mailboxes Flagged After a Bad List: Recovering the Inboxes Before You Resume
Leave the campaign paused, find out per mailbox why it was flagged, clean the remaining leads, and restart at lower volume once warmup has had time to recover. Smartlead's pause gives you a window to fix the list; resuming the same list just spends it.

What each signal means
| Signal | What Smartlead says |
|---|---|
| Campaign paused, bounce limit | Auto Protection threshold reached; set per campaign in SETUP (examples: 3%, 5%) |
| Campaign paused, other | Out of email credits, single mailbox disconnected, leads exhausted, or billing |
| Mailbox Issue Found | Connection or DNS problem; reason under the question mark, fix under Check solution |
| Warmup disabled after a warmup bounce | Pool addresses are validated every 6 hours; fix setup, verify lists, check SPF/DKIM/DMARC |
| Failed warmup | Mailbox can't complete warmup actions; check MX, connectivity, warmup status, bounces and blocklists |
Step by step
- Confirm why the campaign paused. If it's the bounce limit, note the rate and the step where it happened. Bounces concentrated in one step or one lead source point at that source.
- Check every mailbox in the campaign. Engage > Sender Accounts > Mailbox Issue Found, then Skip Validation - Show All Issues, and read the reason for each.
- Fix DNS first. Smartlead's failed-warmup guide starts with MX, SPF and DMARC, and its checker logs pass or fail for them.
- Check blocklists for the sending domains and IPs, as Smartlead's guide suggests; the blacklist check covers the common lists.
- Export the leads that haven't been sent yet. The Smartlead leads to email list tool turns the export into a clean file. Verify it on the verify page and remove invalid results; build a suppression list from Smartlead for the ones that bounced.
- Turn on Auto Protection on the restarted campaign if it wasn't on, with a threshold low enough to stop the next bad batch early.
- Restart at lower volume per mailbox and keep warmup running. Smartlead advises against speeding warmup up.
Honest limits
Verification removes addresses that don't exist; it can't make a scraped list welcome, and it can't confirm every address. Catch-all domains accept anything and Microsoft-hosted company mailboxes often don't answer clearly, so some results come back risky or unknown. Put those in a separate, smaller campaign or leave them out. And a clean list doesn't repair reputation the bad send already cost; only time and good mail do. For checks to run before the next import, see the Instantly and Smartlead list hygiene checklist.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Verify the unsent leads on the verify page before you restart. The first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
Why did Smartlead pause my campaign?
Smartlead lists five reasons: the High Bounce Rate Auto Protection threshold was reached, the account ran out of email credits, the only connected mailbox has connection problems, all leads are exhausted, or a billing issue. A bounce-limit pause gives you time to investigate before sending continues.
What's a good High Bounce Rate Auto Protection threshold in Smartlead?
Smartlead's help article uses 5% and 3% as examples and doesn't name a default. A lower threshold stops a bad list sooner. On a verified list, 3% leaves room for the normal bounces that slip through while still stopping a bad batch early.
How do I see why a Smartlead mailbox was disconnected?
Go to Engage > Sender Accounts, open the Mailbox Issue Found tab (or filter to disconnected mailboxes), choose Skip Validation - Show All Issues, click the question mark next to the account for the reason, then Check solution for the fix steps.
How long does it take a Smartlead inbox to recover?
Smartlead doesn't publish a recovery time. Its warmup guide says warmup usually takes 2 to 6 weeks with gradual increases and that speeding up isn't recommended; expect recovery after a bad list to take a similar order of time.
