How Much Does Phone Number Validation Cost? Format, Line Type and Carrier Lookups

··4 min read

Phone number validation costs nothing for basic format checks and from about a tenth of a cent to about a cent per number for paid lookups, depending on the provider and plan. What you need depends on the question: format checks catch broken numbers, numbering-plan line type works in many countries, and US and Canadian line type needs a paid carrier lookup. None of these confirms a number is in service or can receive texts.

The levels of phone validation

Level What it tells you Typical cost
Format and parsing Correct length and structure for the country; converts to E.164 Free (libraries and free tools)
Numbering plan Whether the number falls in an assigned range, and the type that range is allocated for Free to low cost
Live carrier lookup Current carrier and line type from carrier data, including ported numbers Paid per lookup

How to check if a phone number is valid explains each level in more depth.

What 10,000 numbers cost at each level

Approach Cost for 10,000
Format and parse only (free tools or a library) $0
Twilio Line Type Intelligence $80
Numverify Professional (one month) $59.99, within its 50,000 allowance
SimpleVerifier live carrier lookups See pricing

If you check phone numbers and also verify emails, one upload that handles both is usually simpler.

Why line type is harder in the US

In many countries, mobile numbers sit in their own ranges, so a number's prefix tells you it is mobile. In the US and Canada, mobile and landline numbers share area codes and exchanges, and numbers move between carriers through porting. That is why free tools often label US numbers as "fixed line or mobile". A live carrier lookup is the way to get a specific answer.

Mobile vs landline lookup and phone line types explained cover the details.

Spend less on lookups

  1. Format first. Normalise everything to E.164 with the phone number formatter.
  2. Dedupe after formatting with the duplicate phone number remover. Different formats of the same number are common.
  3. Run free checks. The bulk phone number validator removes badly formed and unassigned numbers.
  4. Only look up what matters. Pay for carrier lookups on the numbers you will text, not on the whole CRM.

What validation does not tell you

Be clear about the limits before you buy:

  • It does not confirm the number is in service right now.
  • It does not confirm the number can receive SMS.
  • It does not tell you who owns the number, or whether they consented to contact.

For calling and texting rules, see TCPA: mobile vs landline and the FCC reassigned numbers database.

Which level do you actually need?

Goal Level needed
Clean up a CRM's phone formatting Format and parse
Remove clearly invalid numbers from a call list Format plus numbering plan
Remove landlines before an SMS campaign outside the US Numbering-plan line type is often enough
Remove landlines before a US or Canadian SMS campaign Live carrier lookup
Know the carrier for routing or reporting Live carrier lookup

Start at the cheapest level that answers your question, and only pay for more where it changes what you do.

Start with the free check

Try the free landline or mobile checker on a few numbers. For full lists alongside your emails, sign in on the verify page: you get 100 free email checks when you sign in with Google, no card, and phone checks are included on the paid plans.

Common questions

How much does phone number validation cost?

Basic format validation is often free. Paid live lookups are priced per number: in October 2026, Twilio Lookup's Line Type Intelligence was $0.008 per request and Numverify's Basic plan was $14.99 a month for 5,000 requests. SimpleVerifier offers live carrier lookups as a paid extra on top of its format checks; see its pricing page.

How can I validate a phone list without overspending?

Start with free formatting and number-plan checks to remove badly formed numbers and duplicates. Only pay for live carrier lookups on the numbers where line type matters, such as before an SMS campaign.

Can phone validation tell me if a number is active?

Format and line-type checks cannot. They tell you whether a number is correctly structured and what type of line its range or carrier record indicates. Whether it is currently in service is a different question that these checks do not answer.

Why do US numbers need a paid lookup for line type?

In the US and Canada, mobile and landline numbers share the same area codes and ranges, and numbers can be ported between carriers. Line type has to come from a carrier database rather than the number itself.
