Which Contacts Count Toward Your Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot or ActiveCampaign Bill?
Cleaning a list lowers your email platform bill only if you take the dead addresses out of what the platform counts. Verification tells you which addresses are invalid; the platform's billing rule decides whether removing, suppressing or archiving them saves money, and when. The four big platforms have four different rules.
Sources, read 2 November 2026: Mailchimp's about your contacts, Klaviyo's how Klaviyo billing works, HubSpot's understand marketing contacts billing and set contacts as marketing, and ActiveCampaign's do unsubscribed, unconfirmed or bounced contacts count against my contact limit?
The rules side by side
| Platform | Counts toward the bill | Doesn't count | How to drop a dead address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp | Subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed | Cleaned, archived | Archive it |
| Klaviyo (Profiles and Email plans) | Profiles with an email that aren't suppressed | Suppressed profiles | Suppress it |
| HubSpot | Marketing contacts | Non-marketing contacts | Set it to non-marketing |
| ActiveCampaign | Accounts created on or after 3 Nov 2025: all contacts. Older accounts: active contacts | Older accounts: bounced and unsubscribed | Delete it (newer accounts); older accounts stop paying once it's bounced or unsubscribed |
Two details catch people out:
- Mailchimp counts unsubscribes. An audience full of old unsubscribes is billed every month until you archive them. Cleaned contacts (addresses that bounced) already don't count.
- Klaviyo bills a profile until it's suppressed. Its billing article recommends suppressing bounced addresses to reduce the billable count, and says bounced emails still count toward the plan's sending limit. A dead address costs you twice: once as a profile, once per send.
Timing: when the saving shows up
- HubSpot is the slowest. Non-marketing changes take effect on the update date: the renewal day on monthly billing, the first of the month on yearly. Tier upgrades happen automatically once you exceed the limit; downgrades only happen at renewal. Clean before an import, not after it pushes you up a tier.
- Klaviyo doesn't downgrade automatically. Once the active count drops, choose the lower tier in billing yourself, or turn on auto-downgrade if you use flexible sending.
- Mailchimp and ActiveCampaign: change the plan once the count is below the tier you want. Check the plan page for the exact tier edges.
Step by step
- Export the list with the email and status columns.
- Verify it on the verify page and set aside the invalid results.
- Act on the invalid ones in the platform: archive in Mailchimp, suppress in Klaviyo, set non-marketing in HubSpot, delete in ActiveCampaign. Platform walkthroughs: Klaviyo suppressed profiles, Mailchimp cleaned contacts, cleaning HubSpot contacts, cleaning an ActiveCampaign list.
- Archive old unsubscribes in Mailchimp too, if you don't need them in the audience; keep a suppression file so a re-import can't add them back.
- Change the tier once the count has updated.
Put your own numbers into the list cleaning savings calculator first: list size, share you expect to remove, bill before and after. If the drop doesn't cross a tier, the bill won't move, and the case for verifying rests on bounces and sender reputation instead; is email verification worth it? works through that.
What not to remove
Only act on results that are definitively invalid. Risky and unknown results include catch-all company domains, which accept every address so single mailboxes can't be confirmed, and many Microsoft consumer mailboxes (outlook.com, hotmail.com), which don't answer mailbox checks reliably. Those are often real subscribers; archiving them saves a few cents and loses readers.
Where SimpleVerifier fits
Upload your export on the verify page; the first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
Do unsubscribed contacts count in Mailchimp?
Yes. Mailchimp's contact status table lists subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed as counting toward the monthly contact limit, and cleaned and archived as not counting. Archiving contacts you no longer need is how you lower the count.
Do suppressed profiles count toward Klaviyo billing?
Klaviyo's billing article says Profiles and Email plans bill on profiles with an email address that aren't suppressed from email. Suppressed profiles stay for reporting but drop out of the active count. The plan doesn't downgrade automatically unless you use flexible sending with auto-downgrade.
Will removing contacts lower my HubSpot bill right away?
No. Setting contacts to non-marketing takes effect on the next update date (the renewal day on monthly billing, the first of each month on yearly), and HubSpot says contact tier downgrades only happen at renewal. Tier upgrades happen automatically once you go over the limit.
Is it worth verifying a list just to cut my platform bill?
Only if the platform stops billing for the invalid addresses once you act on them and the drop crosses a pricing tier. Work out both with your own numbers before you pay for verification; the deliverability benefit is often the bigger reason.
