How to Verify Emails Collected in Typeform Before You Follow Up

··5 min read

To verify emails collected in Typeform, export the responses from Results, then Responses as a CSV, run the email column through a verifier, and pass only the valid rows on to Mailchimp, your CRM or your outreach tool. Typeform's Email question only checks that an answer looks like an email address, so typos, fake entries and bot submissions all reach your results.

Facts below are from Typeform's help centre, read on 2 November 2026.

What Typeform checks, and what it does not

Typeform's answer validation article says the Email question checks for "a valid email format (e.g. xxxx@yyy.zzz) by default". That catches a missing @. It does not catch:

  • jane@gmial.com, a typo on a real provider
  • asdf@asdf.com, typed to get past the form
  • an address at a company domain whose mailbox was closed
  • a throwaway inbox that disappears in an hour

Typeform's own email validation workaround uses two forms and sends a link to the address entered. It works, but it adds a step for every respondent and most forms do not use it. For responses you already have, verifying the export is the practical fix.

Quizzes, scorecards and lead magnets tend to collect the most fake addresses, because the reward appears after the form. Stop fake signups covers why.

Step 1: Export the responses

From Typeform's export your responses article:

  1. On a desktop browser, open the form from your workspace.
  2. Click Results, then Responses.
  3. Select all responses, or apply a filter first, such as a date range.
  4. Use the export option and choose CSV (XLSX is also offered).
  5. For large exports, Typeform emails you when the file is ready, with a Download responses button.

Two things to know: if you selected or filtered responses, only those are exported, and the file only has an email column if the form asked for one. Our Typeform export page lists the same steps.

Google Sheets instead. If the form is connected to Google Sheets (Connect, then Google Sheets, then Connect), the sheet holds the responses already. Typeform says you can send up to 1,000 existing responses when you connect (Sheets FAQ). Older responses need the CSV export. To check a sheet directly, see verify emails in Google Sheets.

Step 2: Tidy the email column

A Typeform CSV has one column per question plus metadata such as submit date and network ID. Before verifying:

  1. Keep the columns you need: the email answer, name, the answers you will use to segment, and the submit date. The CSV import formatter drops and renames columns.
  2. Trim spaces. Mobile keyboards add trailing spaces that break matching later.
  3. Remove duplicates. People submit twice. Remove duplicate emails handles case variants.
  4. Delete obvious test responses from your own team.
  5. Check consent. If the form had a marketing opt-in question, filter on it. Respondents who did not tick it should get the result they asked for, not your newsletter.

Step 3: Verify the addresses

Upload the file on the verify page, or try a sample with the CSV email verifier. Each address gets a live mailbox check and the other columns stay attached, so you keep each person's answers next to the result.

Result What to do
Valid Pass on to Mailchimp, the CRM or the sequence
Catch-all Pass on with a tag; send after the valid group
Unknown Re-check in a day or two
Invalid Drop
Disposable Drop from marketing; the person did not want follow-up
Role address (info@, sales@) Fine for B2B enquiries, usually not for a personal nurture

For a quick look at a single suspicious answer, the free email checker checks one address at a time.

Step 4: Send only the good rows on

To Mailchimp. Typeform has a native Mailchimp integration in the Connect panel, which needs an email field to create contacts (Typeform and Mailchimp). For past responses, import the verified file into your audience instead of syncing everything. Our Mailchimp list clean-up guide covers the import.

To a CRM. Import the valid file into HubSpot, Pipedrive or similar, matching on email. If the contacts are already there from an earlier sync, re-import verified emails into HubSpot shows how to update a status field without creating duplicates.

To a cold or sales sequence. Only contacts who asked to be contacted, such as demo requests, belong here. Split catch-all rows into their own campaign.

Step 5: Check new responses as they arrive

Exporting once a month works for a small form. For a busy one, check each response as it comes in:

Typeform still accepts the bad answer, but it never reaches your list.

Which forms need this most

Not every form needs the same care. A rough order, from most bad addresses to fewest:

  1. Quizzes, calculators and scorecards where the result appears after the email question. People want the result, not the follow-up.
  2. Giveaways and lead magnets. Throwaway inboxes and duplicate entries are common.
  3. Event and webinar registrations. Mostly real, but full of mobile typos.
  4. Demo and contact requests. Usually real, because the person wants a reply. Still worth a check before a rep's sequence starts, since a bounced first email looks like you never answered.

For the first two, check every response before it goes anywhere. For the last two, a check in the same Zapier or Make step that creates the CRM record is enough.

Checklist

  • Responses exported from Results > Responses (all, or the filter you meant)
  • Only the columns you need, spaces trimmed, duplicates removed
  • Respondents without marketing consent kept out of marketing lists
  • Every address verified; invalid and disposable rows dropped
  • Catch-all rows tagged and sent last
  • New responses checked on arrival

Verify your responses

Upload your Typeform export on the verify page. You get 100 free email checks when you sign in with Google, no card, which covers a month of responses for many forms. For bigger volumes, monthly plans are on the pricing page.

Common questions

Does Typeform validate email addresses?

Only the format. Typeform's help centre says the Email question checks for a valid email format by default, such as xxxx@yyy.zzz. It does not check whether the mailbox exists. Typeform's documented workaround for confirming an address uses a second form and emails a link to the address entered.

How do I export Typeform responses to CSV?

Open the form, go to Results, then Responses, select all responses or apply a filter, and use the export option to download CSV or XLSX. Large exports are prepared in the background and Typeform emails you when the file is ready.

Can I send Typeform responses straight to Mailchimp?

Yes. Typeform has a native Mailchimp integration in the Connect panel, which needs an email field to create contacts. It passes along whatever was typed, so typos and fake addresses go into Mailchimp too. Verify before connecting old responses, and consider checking new ones as they arrive.

Why do so many form emails bounce?

Forms collect what people type. Mobile typos, fake addresses entered to see a result page, and bots all pass a format check. Lead magnets and quizzes attract more of these than contact forms, because people want the reward without giving a real address.

Check your list before you send

Real mailbox checks over SMTP, and nothing is sent to the address. Sign in with Google and your first 100 email checks are free, no card. Plans for bigger lists are on the pricing page.
