Do You Need a Separate Domain for 30 Cold Emails a Day?
No, you don't need a separate domain to send 30 or 40 hand-written cold emails a day, but it's cheap insurance. Your main domain also carries customer replies, invoices and password resets, and at low volume a couple of bounces or spam reports are a big percentage. If you stay on the main domain, verify every address and keep the emails genuinely one-to-one. If you split, it costs a domain and one mailbox a month.
An r/sales thread asked exactly this: one warmed Google Workspace domain, a niche physical product, 30 to 40 manual emails a day, no images, one link. Is a second domain worth setting up?
Why low volume doesn't mean low risk
Rates are percentages, and small denominators make them jumpy:
| Daily sends | Bounces that make 5% | Bounces that make 2% |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 2 | 1 |
| 100 | 5 | 2 |
| 500 | 25 | 10 |
The same applies to spam reports. Google's sender guidelines ask all senders to keep the Postmaster Tools spam rate below 0.3%, and recommend under 0.1%. Postmaster Tools may not show data at very low volume, so you won't see it rising. You'll just see replies drop. Check your own numbers with the bounce rate calculator.
When the main domain is reasonable
- The list is small and researched, not a bulk export.
- Every address is verified the week you send, and you skip addresses that come back risky.
- Emails are written one at a time, with no tracking pixel and at most one link.
- Volume stays flat. No spikes when you find a new list.
- Someone reads the replies, including bounces, every day.
When to split
- You plan to grow past one person's manual volume or add a sequencer.
- The list comes from a database export or a scraper.
- The main domain is critical: transactional mail, invoices, support.
- You've had a bounce spike before.
Setting up a second domain
- Pick a name that's obviously yours, like a prefix or suffix on your brand. The cold email domain generator suggests available lookalikes, and the lookalike domain checker shows confusable variants.
- Authenticate it. SPF, DKIM and DMARC, checked with the email domain health checker.
- Redirect its website to your main site, so anyone who checks the domain lands somewhere real.
- Warm it gently. A few emails a day, rising over a few weeks. The email warmup calculator gives a schedule.
- Keep the main domain for replies that matter. Once a prospect replies and becomes a customer, move the thread to your main address.

Verify either way
Whichever domain you use, the bounce rate is the signal you control most. Upload the list on the verify page and send the valid file. The first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in, which covers several days at this volume. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks, and one-time packs of 10,000 checks for $15 never expire. Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. See pricing.
Common questions
Can I send cold email from my main business domain?
You can, and at low volume with a verified, targeted list many people do. The risk is that a bad week lands on the domain your customers, invoices and password resets use. A separate domain moves that risk elsewhere for a small monthly cost.
How many cold emails a day are safe from one inbox?
There's no published safe number from Google or Microsoft. Cold email platforms often suggest 20 to 50 a day per inbox. Your own bounce rate, spam reports and replies tell you more than any figure.
Does a new domain need warming up?
Yes. It has no history. Start with a few emails a day, grow over a few weeks, and keep the list clean so the first signals are good ones.
Will a separate domain look less trustworthy?
Less than a burned main domain. Pick a name that's clearly yours, such as getbrand.com or brandhq.com, use the same signature, and redirect the website to your main site.
