Do Lead Data Providers Refund Credits for Bounced Emails? What the Terms Say
Some lead data providers refund credits when their emails bounce, but the terms are narrow, and no refund covers the damage a bounce does to your sending domain. Apollo refunds credits for verified emails that bounce within 30 days; one of its help pages limits this to mail sent inside Apollo, a newer one doesn't. Findymail refunds credits if your bounce rate tops 5%. Hunter doesn't charge for searches that find nothing but doesn't promise bounce refunds. Read the terms of the provider you use, then verify exports before sending so you never need the refund.
"Paying for data that bounces" is one of the most repeated complaints in cold email forums, usually after a campaign from an export of several months ago. Here is what the published policies say, as read on 2 November 2026.
What the published policies say
| Provider | What's refunded or free | Conditions | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo | Email credits for verified emails that bounce | Sent within Apollo, within 30 days of the request; refunded in the next billing cycle; no refunds for mobile numbers | How do data requests work (updated 28 Oct 2026) |
| Findymail | Credits, if bounces exceed 5% | Its pricing page: "We guarantee a <5% bounce rate. If your bounce rate exceeds 5%, we refund your credits." Also: "No charge if we can't find it." | Findymail pricing |
| Hunter | Searches with no result; failed verifications | "If the email address can't be found, it's free"; a verification that fails returns Unknown with no credit used. No bounce refund on the page | Hunter pricing |
Apollo's exact wording: "If you send a message to an Apollo verified email within 30 days of requesting it and your email bounces, Apollo refunds your credits in the next billing cycle. Apollo only refunds credits for bounced emails sent within Apollo. Apollo doesn't refund any credits for mobile numbers."
What these policies leave out
- Exports. Apollo's data requests article covers mail sent inside Apollo only; its newer email statuses page doesn't say so. Most cold email teams export to Instantly, Smartlead or another sequencer, so confirm with Apollo whether those bounces count.
- Time. Apollo's window is 30 days from the request. Lists pulled months ago and sent later are outside it, and they are also the lists most likely to bounce.
- Your domain. A credit is worth cents. A first campaign at 8% bounces can push a new domain into spam for weeks. No provider refunds that.
- The labour. Rebuilding inboxes and pausing campaigns costs more than the data did.
Protect the domain instead of chasing the credit
- Verify every export the week you send. Upload it on the verify page, or for Apollo files use the Apollo email verifier. Valid, risky and invalid download as separate files.
- Send the valid file first. Hold risky rows (catch-all domains and Microsoft consumer addresses) for a separate, smaller send.
- Keep the bounce export. If a provider's policy does apply, the SMTP replies are your evidence. The bounced email extractor pulls the addresses out of bounce messages.
- Test a new source small. Before committing a budget, send a few hundred verified rows and compare bounce rates. Our post on testing a new lead source has the sample sizes.
Our post on why Apollo verified emails bounce covers the specific reasons for that provider: the check has a date, catch-alls rest on evidence you can't re-check, and Apollo's suppression stays inside Apollo.
What SimpleVerifier charges for
Duplicates and addresses we can't check are free, and every result comes back as valid, risky or invalid rather than a guess presented as valid. The first 100 checks are free with a Google sign-in on the verify page. Starter is $9 a month for 2,500 checks, and Pro is $39 a month with the first 100,000 checks a month at full speed, then slower, never cut off. One-time packs of 10,000 checks for $15 never expire. Common questions
Does Apollo refund credits for bounced emails?
Yes, with conditions. Apollo's help center says that if you send to an Apollo verified email within 30 days of requesting it and it bounces, it refunds the credit in the next billing cycle, and that page limits it to emails sent within Apollo. Its email statuses page, updated 2 November 2026, describes bounces within 30 days of purchase as refunded automatically and doesn't repeat the "within Apollo" condition. It doesn't refund mobile number credits.
I exported Apollo leads to Instantly and they bounced. Can I get credits back?
Possibly. Apollo's data requests article limits refunds to emails sent within Apollo, but its email statuses page (updated 2 November 2026) describes refunds for bounces within 30 days of purchase without that condition. Ask Apollo support before you rely on it.
Which lead data providers have a bounce guarantee?
Policies change, so read each provider's current terms. Of the pages we read on 2 November 2026, Findymail publishes a refund when bounces exceed 5%, Apollo refunds bounced verified emails within 30 days (its two help pages differ on whether mail sent outside Apollo counts), and Hunter's pricing page makes no bounce refund promise.
Is a credit refund enough if my data bounces?
Rarely. The credit is worth cents. A campaign with a high bounce rate can hurt the sending domain for weeks, and no data provider refunds that.
