555 Phone Numbers: Are They Real, and Why Validators Say They're Valid
In North America, 555-0100 through 555-0199 is reserved for fictional use: films, TV, books and example forms. That's why on-screen numbers look like (212) 555-0147. The rest of the 555 exchange was set aside for information services, and 555-1212 has long been directory assistance, but almost none of it reaches a real person. Yet a standard phone validator will tell you (212) 555-0100 is a valid New York number. Here's why, and how to catch them.
What the 555 range is
In a US number, the three digits after the area code are the exchange. 555 as an exchange has been special for decades:
| Number | What it is |
|---|---|
| (NPA) 555-0100 to 555-0199 | Reserved for fictional use by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator |
| (NPA) 555-1212 | Directory assistance |
| Other (NPA) 555-XXXX | Set aside for information services; very few were ever assigned |
| (555) XXX-XXXX | Not a number: 555 isn't an area code |
So (415) 555-0123 is a stand-in number and (555) 123-4567 isn't a number at all.
Why validators accept them
Validators check whether a number fits the numbering plan's pattern, and NPA-555-01XX fits it. We ran these through Google's libphonenumber (Python, version 9.0.41), the library behind most phone validators:
| Input | libphonenumber says |
|---|---|
| (212) 555-0100 | Valid, US, mobile or landline |
| (415) 555-0123 | Valid, US, mobile or landline |
| (212) 555-1234 | Valid, US, mobile or landline |
| (555) 123-4567 | Invalid |
| +1 555 555 5555 | Invalid |
The library is doing its job: it answers "could this number exist in this plan?", and the plan's pattern doesn't single out 555. It's a reminder that valid isn't the same as real. Our post on how to check if a phone number is valid covers the four levels of phone checks and where each one stops.
Where 555 numbers show up in lists
- Forms. People who don't want to give a real number type one they've seen in a film, or the placeholder from your own form.
- Demo and test data that leaked into production.
- Scraped data from pages that use example numbers.
- Templates and docs, copied into a CRM as if they were contacts.
A 555 number in a lead list is a good sign the rest of that row needs a second look too. Someone who invents a phone number often invents an email.
How to catch them
Add one rule after normal validation. In E.164, a North American 555 number is +1 + area code + 555:
^\+1[2-9]\d{2}555\d{4}$
To catch only the fictional block:
^\+1[2-9]\d{2}5550[1]\d{2}$
Most teams flag the whole 555 exchange for review, since real assignments outside 555-1212 are so rare.
In a spreadsheet, once numbers are in E.164 (see validating phone numbers in Google Sheets):
=REGEXMATCH(C2, "^\+1[2-9][0-9]{2}555[0-9]{4}$")
Other countries' example numbers
The UK has the same idea. Ofcom reserves drama ranges such as 07700 900000–900999 for mobiles and 020 7946 0000–0999 for London. Validators handle them inconsistently: libphonenumber rejects the 07700 900 mobile range but accepts the London drama range as an ordinary valid landline. Details in UK phone number format.
Cleaning a list with 555s in it
Upload the CSV on the SimpleVerifier verifier. Every phone gets phone_status, phone_e164, phone_country and phone_type. Then filter phone_e164 for 555 in positions 6–8 (the exchange) to find the fictional ones. Like any numbering-plan check, ours marks 555-01XX numbers valid, so do this extra filter. Any email column in the same file gets a live mailbox check, which tells you whether the rest of the row is real.
Phone format, country and number-type checks are included on paid plans; see pricing.

Common questions
Are 555 phone numbers real?
Mostly not in use. In North America, 555-0100 through 555-0199 is reserved for fictional use in films, TV and examples. Other 555 numbers were set aside for information services, and 555-1212 has long been used for directory assistance, but very few 555 numbers ring a real person.
Why do movies use 555 numbers?
So no real person gets calls from viewers dialling a number they saw on screen. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator reserves 555-0100 to 555-0199 for this purpose.
Why does a phone validator say a 555 number is valid?
Because validators check whether a number fits the numbering plan's pattern, and NXX-555-01XX fits it. Google's libphonenumber marks (212) 555-0100 as a valid New York number. Catching fictional numbers needs an extra rule.
Is 555 an area code?
No. A number like (555) 123-4567 is invalid because 555 isn't an assigned area code. 555 as the exchange (the three digits after the area code) is the special case.
