Low Match Rate on Customer Match or Custom Audiences? Clean the Email List First
Low match rates on Google Customer Match, Meta Custom Audiences or LinkedIn Matched Audiences usually happen because many emails on your list are not the address tied to the person's account on that platform. Cleaning the list cannot change which address someone uses, but normalising, deduping and removing invalid addresses makes the upload accurate and stops dead rows from dragging the rate down.
What decides a match
An ad platform hashes your email and looks for an account using that address. A match needs:
- The address to be correctly formatted and normalised.
- The address to belong to a real, current mailbox (usually).
- The person to use that address on that platform.
Number 3 is the big one, and no list tool can change it.
| List type | Typical fit |
|---|---|
| Consumer emails (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook) | Consumer platforms such as Google and Meta |
| Work emails | Often weaker on consumer platforms; better on LinkedIn |
| Mixed CRM export | Depends on the mix |
What cleaning can improve
| Step | Effect on the upload |
|---|---|
| Normalise (trim, lowercase) | Hashes match how the platform hashed the account's email |
| Remove duplicates | Accurate audience counts |
| Remove invalid addresses | They cannot match; removing them makes the rate meaningful |
| Remove disposable addresses | Rarely tied to a real account |
| Fix typos | gmial.com becomes gmail.com and can match |
Step 1: Normalise
- Trim spaces and lowercase everything.
- For Google Customer Match, Google's instructions say to remove dots before the @ in gmail.com and googlemail.com addresses. The Gmail address normalizer does this.
- Fix obvious domain typos with the email typo corrector.
Step 2: Dedupe and remove junk
Remove duplicates with the duplicate email remover, and drop disposable addresses with the bulk disposable email checker.
Step 3: Verify
Verify the list and keep valid and catch-all addresses for ad uploads; drop invalid ones. Catch-all addresses may still belong to real people, so they are worth including in an ad audience even if you would not cold email them.
Step 4: Hash, if you hash yourself
Hash with SHA-256 after normalising. The free email hasher for Customer Match runs in your browser, so plain addresses never leave your device. Some platforms hash plain-text uploads for you; check each platform's current upload instructions.
Step 5: Add more identifiers where allowed
Platforms can match on more than email. Where you have collected them lawfully and the platform supports them, adding phone numbers (in E.164 format), names and countries can raise matches. Format phones with the phone number formatter.
Step 6: Upload work and personal emails separately
If your CRM holds both work and personal addresses for contacts, test them as separate audiences. You will see which type matches better on each platform, and can use the right one for each.
Rules still apply
Customer lists used for ad targeting are covered by each platform's terms and by privacy law. Upload only data you are allowed to use for this purpose, and honour opt-outs. Is email verification GDPR-compliant? covers the verification side.
What not to expect
- Cleaning will not turn a list of work emails into a high-match consumer audience.
- A clean list of people who do not use the platform will still match poorly.
- Platforms report match rates differently, so compare results within one platform over time rather than across platforms.
A practical upload routine
If you upload customer lists to ad platforms every month, a fixed routine keeps results comparable:
- Export from one source of truth, usually your CRM or ESP, with a consistent set of columns.
- Remove opt-outs and anyone who asked not to be targeted before anything else.
- Normalise, dedupe and fix typos using the steps above.
- Verify and drop invalid and disposable addresses.
- Split into audiences that make sense: customers, trial users, leads, lapsed customers.
- Hash and upload, keeping the file name and date so you can compare months.
- Record the reported match rate for each audience on each platform.
After a few months you will know what "normal" looks like for each audience, and a sudden drop tells you something changed in the source data rather than at the platform.
Reading match rate changes
| Change | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| Match rate drops after a big import | The new contacts are a different type, such as work emails |
| Audience size falls month to month | Contacts leaving, or opt-outs being removed correctly |
| One platform matches much better than another | Your list fits that platform's users better |
| Match rate jumps after cleaning | Invalid and duplicate rows had been inflating the denominator |
Treat the reported rate as a rough guide. Platforms round and report differently, and they do not tell you which rows matched.

Common questions
Why is my Customer Match or Custom Audience match rate low?
Usually because many emails on the list are not the address the person uses for that platform account, such as work emails uploaded to a consumer platform. Old, invalid and badly formatted addresses lower it further.
Does email verification improve match rate?
It removes invalid addresses, which cannot match anyway, so the percentage you see reflects real people. It does not make a valid address match an account that uses a different email.
Should I hash emails before uploading?
Platforms accept or require SHA-256 hashed emails, and normalisation must happen before hashing: trim spaces and lowercase. Google also asks for dots to be removed from gmail.com and googlemail.com usernames. Check each platform's current instructions.
Which emails match best on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn accounts are often tied to personal addresses but many members add work emails too. Uploading both work and personal addresses for a contact, where you have them lawfully, can improve matches.
